The backup camera that I have is a strip and must be mounted to the license plate holes, so I routed the wire through the hole underneath the plastic cover for the light right above the plate. Approach car, unlock using remote, go to boot, press button, it won't open. Open a rear door and press the lock button on the remote. Locks chatter, but won't lock because door is open. Open the tailgate manually and leave it open, take both the cables OFF the battery and hold them together (when the cables are OFF the battery) re install the cables on battery and wait a minute. Close the tailgate manually. Cycle the car to key on engine off, wait about 30 seconds then key off. I got curious and ended up searching and reading from several other forums about the same complaint, some with very sad consequences such as damage with it opening inside a garage, to a person having a laptop with years worth of pictures stolen. This was also an occurrence for cx-5, mazda 3, and mazda 6 owners too in addition to cx-9’s. .
